History:
The Château du Retout is the reunion of two famous vineyards of the Haut-Médoc «Château Retout Pineguy Mercadier» and «Château Salva de Camino» which are mentioned in the «Traité des Vins du Médoc» of William Franck (1845 Edition) and in the «Bordeaux et ses Vins» (1868 Edition). Completely ruined during the Phylloxera outbreak of the last century, those properties were acquired in the early 1950s by the Kopp family who recreated the vineyard with great patience and nowadays it extends over an area of thirty four hectares in the commune of Cussac-Fort- Médoc.
In the middle of the vineyard, there is a fortified mill, built in 1395, that was used as a watch tower during the reign of Louis XV, mostly during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), to warn the Fort Médoc and Citadel of Blaye about the arrival of enemy ships. The Château du Retout has been classified as a Cru Bourgeois in 1932. In 2003, a new official classification was med and the Château du Retout has retained its Cru Bourgeois classification.
